27june, 2010 Manali , India.Just entering the Himalayas Great place to relax, lots of apple orchards
27-28 June, 2010 Keylong – last township before starting our trek Limbering up with a walk to the Monastry on the other side of the valley
View of Keylong village from the monastry
29th June,2010 Darcha -stepping off point for our trek to Padum. A 11 day trek(113km)
30th June, 2010 on the way at last. The way starts along a road which when finished will eventually destroy this pristine part of the world. Darcha to Zanskar Sumdo is a full days walk.
Looking back down the Darcha River
Noryang , our two horses and me of course
From Zanskar Sumdo the path leaves the main valley and climbs towards Shingo La. The easy part is over , now climbing , breathlessly and age is wearying me.
snow in the distance. Now joined up with Paul from Austria and Kathy and Simone from US ( well sort of)
Two days to get over the pass. The halfway stop is Chumig Nagpo. The weather is unpredictable and everyone is on edge as the weather can change quickly.
Nearing the top, Ann is on one of our two pack horses. Noryang is carrying his new stove
onwards and upwards
trekkers coming the other way
At last at the top. Prayer flags in the background. Paul providing moral support. A great feeling!
On the way down now. Paul wanting to ski.
At last at our campsite. Still very cold but comraderie great. Tiensin is also in this picture. He is the guide/horseman for my friends.
Noryang our guide and horseman.
Simone- forever optimistic. Makes a great coffee on the trail
Our faithful accommodation- 30 years old and doing better than me. This campsite is at Lhakhang Sumbo. Really this place is one of the origins of that great river the Indus.
The view from our tnet.
The great rock monolith Gumburankan. (5320m) We get to this this rock most of the day.
edelweis flowers but otherwise barren mountain sides. The geology reads like a book.
Appraoching Kargyag. The stupas mark the edge of the village which is in the next depression.
Now we can see Kargyag in the distance. A hard life faces everyone who lives here
The main crop is barley. Yaks and goats are grazed away from the village in summer.
beautiful alpine flowers pop up everywhere.
Our host in Kargyag. Chapaties and sweet tea are a mainstay in summer
leaving Kargyag for Testa and a wedding ( well sort of)
Elders to represent the grooms family from Reru much further down the valley.
beatiful kids everywhere
ladies full of wisdom
After leaving Testa the trail can sometimes be testing. Obviously not for the faint hearted.
Ann putting up with a little drizzle. An unusual feature in Zanskar. Heading for Purne.
Phugtal Gonpa. One of the highlites of this treak. About 11/2 hours walk from Purne on the side valley Tsarap Chu.
Puga back at Purne. The farmers were worried about the harvest as the weather this year was very cold.
Bardon Gonpa. Just down the road from Mune Gonpa where we spent the previous night. This was taken from the other side of the river where there is a very nice track. The road way is now quite ugly.
how about this. Looks like a retreat for the monks from Bardon Gonpa. To me it looks like a house from one of the Grimm's fairy stories
Karsha Monastry – across the valley from Padum. The end of the trek for us.
views from ther roof of our accommodation
another view liiking towards Zangla
this is an impressive place
Our host lama Wangpo. The kindly monk who made us more than welcome at Karsha monastry.
Back in Padum. Hows this for a home. I know evryone talks about building on a rock but under it?
Tenzin Lobsag our hosts at the Phugtal Monastry Guesthouse in Padum. Don't read the writeups Padum is a very nice place to stay and we were made to feel very welcome here. Thanks to evryone who made our trip so enjoyable.
