Scamander Attractions
Remember when Scamander had it’s old bridge.
This was taken after the 2006 bushfires. I know there is nothing we can do to restore it. But I do despair as to the short sitedness of our Council when they determined that it should be removed. Sure it required maintenance but isn’t that the norm for any asset. I am sure that the bikeways and other walkways, footbridges into St. Helens all require periodic servicing.
The reason I am writing is that I came across another bridge identical to ours but this time located in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka. Have a look at it.
the new bridge runs along side it and is also similar to ours:
They kept there’s as a walkway and as a tourist icon.
Not much more I can say as we can’t bring the bridge back. But what we can do is develop Scamander with a little more infrastructure. At present it has a very random state of changes. For example the playground is now fenced to protect children but how can that be so when the Scamander River is so close. (or is this fencing to keep pedophiles out) . I hope no one is implying that children locked in will be that much safer. I think we need to be realistic and if safety is a parameter then that whole section including BBQ area and shoreline should be treated as one item. And to top off the second wind sail / shelter area looks hideous. ( a few trees might also be considered)
And where is the walkway up the river. The existing track on the south side is hardly traversable on foot and not at all for bicycles. We need infrastructure in Scamander. Much has been done in St. Helens to improve things but it would seem to me that Scamander is ignored.
Speaking of infrastructure the Council took over the sports complex for zilch and have done nothing to improve the amenities. There is no fencing, or toilets for the cricketers. The tennis courts are abysmal and there is no indoor facility for sports in winter. Why can’t there be a place where people can play table tennis, volley ball etc. Sure not to the scale built in St. Helens but we do need something.
Hope this whinge session leads others to ask for more.
